Questions & Answers

Who are the notable alumni?
1 Answer
  • Jennifer Carroll, the 18th Lieutenant Governor of Florida, earned her MBA from Saint Leo in 2008. She’s not the only Saint Leo graduate with a position in politics. Florida Representative Ed Narain, Delegate Rick Morris, and Congressman Rich Nugent are also on the list. Dozens of Saint Leo alumni have launched careers in Major League Baseball as well. Recent players counted among them are Shortstop Taylor Perez and Catcher Daniel Torres, both of the Seattle Mariners. Another big name in baseball is Class of ’82 graduate Bob Tewksbury. He is a retired All-Star pitcher and currently serves as the sports psychology coach for the Boston Red Sox. Saint Leo retired Tewksbury’s jersey (#27) in 2014 in a celebration coined “Bob Tewksbury Day.” In other news, has your late-night channel surfing ever resulted in a two-hour binge of I Love Lucy? Come on, admit it, you know it has! Desi Arnaz, who played Ricky Ricardo, attended Saint Leo Preparatory School to improve his English after coming the United States. In addition to these notable alumni, Saint Leo has helped 80,000 graduates start their professional careers.

What is the campus setting like?
1 Answer
  • Saint Leo is characterized by its Spanish mission-style architecture. Picture warm and inviting beige buildings with red roofs, and you’re visualizing nearly every building on campus. Saint Leo is the oldest Catholic university in Florida. Naturally it houses a chapel where you can attend Sunday mass if you so desire. Not your thing? That’s okay. Students are not required to get involved in the university’s spiritual life, and people of all faiths and backgrounds are welcome. If you just want to stop by the monastery to feed the cats, that’s cool, too! Or find inner peace by resting in a futuristic nap pod in the Relaxation Room. With campus set in central Florida, the beach is just an hour drive away. It’s far enough to keep you focused on your studies yet close enough for a weekend getaway. However, those who crave waterfront views won’t feel landlocked. Campus sits along the edge of Lake Jovita. You might be able to admire it from your residence hall. If not, then hang out in the company of friends and classmates on the Student Community Center’s lakefront patio. The Saint Leo University Campus is small, diverse, connected, and rich in opportunity.

What are the online learning and extension/adult learning opportunities?
1 Answer
  • Saint Leo’s online programs are a little different than most. And that’s a good thing. Courses run for eight-weeks with six terms per year. That means you can earn your degree faster than your friends or coworkers studying at other universities. Saint Leo’s eight-week online class schedule is ideal for adult learners. However, it’s also perfect for anyone with a busy schedule. Better yet, you can choose from a range of programs, all offered completely online. Available bachelor’s degree programs include accounting, computer information systems, liberal studies, computer science-information assurance, health care management, psychology, sociology, cybersecurity, religion, criminal justice, and business administration. Students who study business administration at the bachelor’s level will also select a specialization. Specializations include marketing, management, project management, and logistics. Since you will save time earning your bachelor’s degree, you can also start considering graduate programs sooner. The university offers several specialized MBA and criminal justice programs, as well as programs in educational leadership, social work, theology, and instructional design. Not ready to pursue a bachelor’s or master’s degree yet? No problem. You can enroll in an associate’s program first. The university offers online associate’s degree programs in business administration, liberal arts, information technology, and criminal justice. A big draw of Saint Leo’s academics is its accessibility. The university has over 40 education centers located in California, Texas, South Carolina, Georgia, Virginia, Mississippi, and throughout Florida. If you prefer to take classes at a scheduled time and location, find out if there’s an education center in your zip code.

What are the athletic highlights?
1 Answer
  • At one time Saint Leo had an actual lioness as their mascot. The president brought her to home games on a leash. Imagine that! But even now, without a live lion in-residence, Lions pride is strong. The Lions compete at the NCAA Division II level in 19 varsity sports including baseball, basketball, cross country, volleyball, tennis, and golf. In fact, there’s a golf course conveniently located across the street from campus. According to the 2016 Bushnell Golfweek Division II Coaches Poll, the men’s golf team was ranked best in the country. In 2014 the women’s tennis team brought the Lions into the national semifinals for the first time, and the men’s golf team did it again in 2015. People can hear the Lions’ roar across the nation.

What are the school's academic highlights?
1 Answer
  • Between its on-campus, distance learning, and online offerings, Saint Leo offers endless academic options. You can get your associate’s degree on campus and your bachelor’s degree online or vice versa. In the future you’ll have new program options to consider. The university is launching an undergraduate cybersecurity program in 2016. Also, the new graduate-level human services administration program will now be offered at more education centers. Saint Leo’s academic programs have been recognized on a national level. In 2016 U.S. News and World Report ranked the university’s online bachelor’s degree programs within the top 15 percent nationwide and named the university one of the top schools for veterans. Saint Leo serves many students in many ways, and does it well.
